The Movement Series: Hand-Embroidered Ink Paintings On Paper
Inspired by the shifts in nature and
their connections to our emotions as humans.
By focusing on the movements created in nature, the Movement series aims to pull inspiration from the way the natural world reacts around us. The noises we hear, the flow of the breeze, the shifting of seasons—each guiding us to a deeper understanding of our own selves. Each piece represents a different feeling through the use of hand-embroidery on ink painted handmade recycled paper. All elements that help carry the tactile and layered theme of the everyday world.
In celebration of the first selection from the series being released to the public today, I am excited to be able to share more about the group. So, here is a little about the thoughts, feelings, and journey behind each one…
The water flowing over the stones of a stream, stepping over a fall tree, jumping from rock to rock over a river. Over was inspired by these very movements that nature creates and we mimic. The pattern created moves from nature to our physical reactions and eventually to our emotions. Getting over sadness, disappointment, failure. Just like nature, we must show our strength to continue our journey.
Wish covers unspoken moments that create an energy in the air. These captures in time—looking up at the night sky where our spirits seem to guide us or sitting by the ocean as the tide moves out and we reconnect with something greater. These are the movements seen and unseen.
The water rushing down swirling off of the banks and in-between rocks. The wind picks up, spins the freshly fallen leaves around. Whirl turns us—it creates moments of chaos that are sometimes quick passing and at other times they stick around as long as a river. After the rush, we realize our own determination to not get thrown off our path.
Letting go of our weight, we let the salt of the sea pick us up. The water ripples around us and the waves make their way to crash along the shore. There we remain, at peace—lifted—even with these continued movements around us. We can choose to hold ourselves up or we find moments to let go of what keeps us down. Sometimes it’s better to let go.
A branch falls, rolls into the rushing river, and down it continues with the current of the water. Eventually it is released into steady water. There’s a lot going on around us every day. The crash comes to us when too much has built up—we haven’t given ourselves space or time to breathe; things are circling around us. Crash is a reminder to find that still water again.
The stream peacefully weaves its way along. It carries life with its current hopping in and out of the water enjoying the freshness as it heads to a new beginning. Our souls go through points where we filter our energy; we make way for new, clear out the old. Stream brings us to a place to go to reflect and find newness.
