Disconnected
2022
Disconnected began with an exploration of leftover materials. The large sheets of black paper were prepped for sewing, creating holes for the thread to weave through. As the needle of the awl went through the paper, the raised texture the holes were forming together stood out in a way it previously hadn’t. The dark tone of the paper brought it prominently into view, causing a moment to pause.
These pauses became frequent, forcing the pieces to come together in slow stages that weren’t always clear in their intention. In time, it became evident that they represented a disconnect. A disconnect that was forming in the artist-to-work connection, forcing contemplation of staying within the balance of past work or listening to the rebellion to shift direction. The collection became a breakthrough to challenge the familiar and instead to keep poking holes, with each one letting new light stream through the paper.
These pieces together represent a release of restrictions, pushing against a need for structure and the pressure to be one thing. They hold a vibrant energy that fights for artistic flexibility.
